Community Connections
DEEP is about building a strong community
Research shows that in a disaster, people working together have a better chance of survival than individuals acting alone.
Prepared neighbourhoods are resilient neighbourhoods.

Map Your Neighbourhood
DEEP’s Map Your Neighbourhood program focuses on emergency preparedness in your immediate neighbourhood or block. This program was originally developed by Washington State Emergency Management in response to lessons learned in various disaster scenarios (Hurricane Katrina, in particular).
We have held numerous meetings with local community groups such as the Dunbar Residents’ Association (DRA), Dunbar Community Centre, Dunbar Patrol, Dunbar Village Business Association, block watch captains, VECTOR, churches and Scouts to explore how we can work together to strengthen our community disaster response.
DEEP is also a regular participant in local community events. This outreach includes:
Emergency Week – Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is a national event supported by Public Safety Canada, working closely with provincial and territorial emergency management organisations, Indigenous organisations, non-governmental organisations, and private sector organisations that support activities at the local level. An annual event for over 25 years traditionally takes place during the first full week of May.
Salmonberry Days is an annual local event organized by volunteers to celebrate the Dunbar community, nature, heritage homes, culture, gardens, and history, culminating in a family fair at the community centre.
Shakeout BC – “The Great British Columbia ShakeOut, organized by the British Columbia Earthquake Alliance (BCEA), is an annual opportunity for individuals, communities, schools, and organisations to practice essential earthquake safety measures such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”
