SUMMARY:Presentation: Do we need to worry about tsunamis in the Strait of Georgia?
DESCRIPTION:by John Clague\nEmeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University\nTo download a copy of the presentation\, please click here.\nSummary:\nThe south coast of BC is earthquake-prone\, and some types of these earthquakes are tsunami ‘spawners’. The geologic record\, however\, indicates that the 3 million of us living around the Strait of Georgia are in a ‘sweet spot’ tsunami-wise. \nPut differently\, the likelihood of a disastrous tsunami in the Strait of Georgia\, that is a tsunami comparable to those that have struck Japan\, Chile\, Sri Lanka\, India\, and Thailand in this century\, is extremely unlikely. I will argue that we collectively tend to over-exaggerate that hazard. \n\nBIO:\n\nJohn Clague is Emeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University. He was educated at Occidental College (BA)\, the University of California Berkeley (MA)\, and the University of British Columbia (PhD). Clague worked as a Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada from 1975 until 1998. In 1998 he accepted a faculty position in Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University\, which he held until 2016. He currently is busy running a small engineering geology consultancy. Clague is a Quaternary geologist with research specializations in glacial geology\, geomorphology\, natural hazards\, and climate change. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and in 2020 was inducted as an Officer into the Order of Canada. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the journal Natural Hazards.

SUMMARY:Presentation: How Soil Conditions Affect Building Performance During an Earthquake
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr Carlos Ventura P.E.\, P. ENG\n \nSUMMARY:\nThe performance of buildings during an earthquake depends not only on the type of construction but also on the type of soil on which the building is funded.  Lessons learned from past earthquakes have shown that the type of soil has a very significant influence on how buildings shake\, to the point that the level of damage that a building might experience is closely related to the type of soil under and in the vicinity of the building. \nThis talk will discuss how soil conditions affect the level of shaking at a site and how engineers account for the soil conditions when designing a building to resist earthquake shaking. It will also provide information to home owners about what to expect in the different regions of Metro Vancouver. \nBIO:\nDr Carlos Ventura is a Professor and Director EERF – Department of Civil Engineering – UBC

SUMMARY:Presentation: The new Canadian Seismic risk model developed by Natural Resourses Canada
DESCRIPTION:by Dr Tiegan Hobbs\nResearch Scientist at Natural Resources Canada\n \nSUMMARY:\nIn my presentation\, I will describe Canada’s first publicly available Seismic Risk Model. It is a nation-wise risk assessment\, performed at the neighbourhood scale\, meant to empower decision makers and stakeholders with quantitative information. \nBIO:\nTiegan is a seismic risk scientist for the Geological Survey of Canada and an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia in the Earth\, Ocean\, and Atmospheric Sciences department. She uses various geologic\, geophysical\, and geotechnical datasets to better understand active tectonics and natural hazards. Specifically\, she is interested in understanding how the stresses that cause potentially catastrophic events are accumulated through time and space\, how failure is ultimately initiated\, and what the impacts will be for communities and the built environment. She is leading the development of the scenario earthquake catalogue for Canada’s first National Seismic Risk Model\, including validation of the framework against known standards. \nWith a passion for communicating risk\, Tiegan has written over 20 articles for Temblor Earthquake News. She is a member of the Centre for Natural Hazards Research at Simon Fraser University and serves on the steering committee of the American Geophysical Union Hazards Equity Working Group. Tiegan received her Ph.D. in Geophysics and Masters of Geotechnical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology\, a Masters of Geophysics from the University of Victoria\, and a Bachelors in Geology from McGill University.

SUMMARY:Presentation: History of Deep
DESCRIPTION:by Ann Pacey\nFOUNDER OF DEEP AND LONGTIME ADVOCATE FOR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS\nSlides – click here to view the slides used in this presentation\n \n\nSUMMARY:\nThis walk-through DEEP history talk will summarise how\, when and why DEEP was started\, what we’ve accomplished in our 11 years\, and encourage an active discussion of the benefit to our community and ideas to re-energise the organisation to keep it going. \nFrom its launch in late 2011\, the joint effort between the DRA and Village Vancouver (led by Ann Pacey) focused on ‘what can we do to help ourselves’ if a significant event or disaster occurs. Ann will share the early efforts with Vancouver City emergency management and community groups and the training and organisational support we received from other community emergency response groups\, particularly the Seattle-based Community Support Hubs. \nIn addition to our core program\, Map Your Neighbourhood\, DEEP organised presentations and workshops on earthquake readiness\, identifying community vulnerabilities and strengths and educating our neighbours about resilience. \nAnn will also summarise our participation in the 2019 Vancouver Resilient Cities effort under the Rockefeller Foundation\, and the Resiliency Action Plan codeveloped with the Dunbar Resident Association and Community Centre Association. \nWe are at a critical moment going forward\, and we will encourage workshop participants to brainstorm ways to re-energise this vital program.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Tsunami – stealth killers
DESCRIPTION:by Professor John Clague\nEmeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University\n \nSUMMARY:\nIn this century alone\, tsunamis have killed over 250\,000 people\, far more than all earthquakes combined. In my talk\, I review a few of the most deadly tsunamis in recent history and show how tsunamis differ from the most powerful storm-driven waves. I describe the three main causes of tsunamis and discuss the threat they pose to British Columbians. Finally\, I outline the measures in place to provide us with timely warnings.\n\nBIO:\nJohn Clague is Emeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University. SUMMARY:Presentation: Earthquake Hazards and Risk on Canada’s West Coast
DESCRIPTION:by Professor John Clague\nEmeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University\nSlides – click here to download the slides from this presentation\n \nSUMMARY:\nGeologists and geophysicists working along west coast of North America from northern California to southwest British Columbia have demonstrated that giant (magnitude-9) earthquakes occur along the Cascadia subduction zone\, where the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate moves down beneath the edge of North America.\n\nThe most recent of these earthquakes happened in January 1700. Satellite GPS data extending back to the mid-1990s shows a pattern of surface deformation consistent with locking of the megathrust fault separating the Juan de Fuca and North America plates in the build-up to the next giant earthquake. Although the next of these earthquakes will damage all cities along the length of the subduction zone\, the possible damage from far more frequent\, magnitude 6 and 7 crustal earthquakes is greater than that of much larger plate-boundary events.\n\nBIO:\nJohn Clague is Emeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University. DESCRIPTION:by Dr. Carlos Estuardo Ventura\nProfessor of Civil Engineering and Director of EERF\nThe University of British Columbia\n\n \nSUMMARY:\nEarthquakes during the last three decades have shown that the expectations on the performance of buildings designed according a building code during severe earthquakes are different that those from the designers.  Performance of a building during an earthquake can be interpreted in different ways\, and for a home-owner it is very important to have a clear understanding of what a “code-designed” building means.  A “code-designed” building is considered as an “earthquake resistant” building\, not an “earthquake-proof” building.  This presentation will help provide a better understanding of what a “code-designed” building means\, and what kind of performance can be expected if a severe earthquake happens in the region.   The concept of Performance-Based Design will be explained\, as this is the procedure that building codes will follow to ensure seismic resiliency of buildings in the near future.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Pandemics Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Monika Naus\nSlides – click here to view the slides used in this presentation\n \nCORONAVIRUS 2019-nCoV\nThe last day of 2019 the World woke up to a new coronavirus strain that was not previously identified in humans. The cluster of pneumonia cases caused by this virus (2019-nCoV) started in Wuhan\, China. The 2019-nCoV leads to similar symptoms seen in many respiratory illnesses (e.g.\, fever\, dry cough\, sore throat and headache). Although\, mild to moderate most of the time\, a small percent of cases experience more serious clinical signs and symptoms (e.g.\, difficulty in breathing and pneumonia in both lungs) and some result in death. \nThe outbreak was initially linked to live animals in a seafood market in Wuhan City\, but later on human-to-human transmission was also observed. It is known that other viruses causing respiratory illnesses can be spread from a cough or sneeze or with direct contact with respiratory secretions of infected people. \nHuman travel worldwide poses risk for spread of 2019-nCoV across countries. \nChinese authorities have been collaborating with the World Health Organization and experts from around the world in studying this virus and preventing its spread. \nOn February 18\, 2020 Dr. Monika Naus from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) will enlighten our community on 2019-nCoV infection and how to be prepared and protect ourselves. \nDr. Monika Naus\nDr. Monika Naus is an epidemiologist specializing in communicable disease prevention and control. She is the Medical Director of the Communicable Diseases & Immunization Service at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and also a professor in the UBC School of Population & Public Health. Dr. Naus joined the BCCDC in 2001 and prior to that worked at the provincial level in Ontario including during the measles elimination campaign and the Walkerton outbreak. Currently\, Dr. Naus is active on several national and provincial committees related to immunization and communicable disease prevention.
