DESCRIPTION:by Professor John Clague\nEmeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University\n \nSUMMARY:\nIn this century alone\, tsunamis have killed over 250\,000 people\, far more than all earthquakes combined. In my talk\, I review a few of the most deadly tsunamis in recent history and show how tsunamis differ from the most powerful storm-driven waves. I describe the three main causes of tsunamis and discuss the threat they pose to British Columbians. Finally\, I outline the measures in place to provide us with timely warnings.\n\nBIO:\nJohn Clague is Emeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University. He was educated at Occidental College (BA)\, the University of California Berkeley (MA)\, and the University of British Columbia (PhD). Clague worked as a Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada from 1975 until 1998. In 1998 he accepted a faculty position in Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University\, where he worked until 2016. Clague is a geologist with research specializations in glacial geology\, geomorphology\, natural hazards\, and climate change.
